Faculty FTE Trends and Comparisons

The purpose of the Faculty FTE Trends and Comparisons collection of dashboards is to help university decision-makers gain a better understanding of academic and staff FTE trends over time, the degree to which the composition by employee title group (ex. Tenured/Tenure-Track Faculty, Exempt Staff, etc.) changes over time, and it provides FTE trends as they relate to credit hours, sponsored research expenses, and staff FTE.

Trend lines display actual data for five years including the current year. Data in all dashboards can be filtered by Campus of Job, Responsibility Center, Department, Include/Exclude Latest Fiscal Year, and FTE Month (Selects the month of the year to show FTE data. The default view is October census.).

The data displayed in these dashboards provide overall FTE, credit hours, research expenditures, and overall calculated averages per Faculty FTE for the campus.

This data set allows users to analyze:

• How academic and staff FTE trends have changed over time.
• Historical FTE trends as they relate to credit hours, sponsored research expenses, and staff FTE to support decision-making around staffing needs.
• Faculty FTE over time broken out by employee title group.
• Sponsored research expenditure and credit hour trends as compared to shifts in academic position title groups.
• A detailed view of staff FTE trends over time, breaking staff out by title group and exempt staff by employee groupings illustrating trends in staff investment. 

Sections Taught Trends and Comparisons

The purpose of the Sections Taught Trends and Comparisons collection of dashboards is to help university decision makers gain a better understanding of class sections taught trends over time and the relationship of the number of sections taught to faculty FTE, credit hours, courses, and class components.

This data set allows users to analyze:

• What are the trends over time showing number of sections taught by school or department?
• What is the volume of sections taught by class level, by school, or by department?
• What is the volume of sections taught showing credit bearing status by school or department?
• What are the sections taught per faculty FTE trends over time by school or department?
• Of the OCC enrollments attributed to my unit, what campus is providing the instructional effort?
• What are the trends of class section count and credit hours in terms of different groupings?
• How class components are distributed across each Responsibility Center.

Instructional Trends and Comparisons

The Instructional Trends and Comparisons workbook presents unified views of instructional activity, including information regarding relationships among courses offered, the mix of instructional personnel teaching those courses (by employee rank), and students taught over time. These views attribute the credit hours, student headcounts, and instructional FTE and headcounts to the courses taught. Therefore:

• Only teaching personnel are represented in the instructor FTE and headcounts. Personnel not teaching during the timeframe displayed are excluded from these views.
• Only courses with enrolled students are included in these views.​

This data set allows users to analyze:

• The degree to which instructional needs have been met with appointed vs. contract personnel, and the distribution of employee types and ranks within those categorizations.
  • Which instructor type is teaching each class?
  • Are there class levels that are not getting adequate instruction by appointed instructors?
  • What are the trends, by employee group, in:
    • Credit hours/instructional FTE (for appointed personnel)
    • Credit hours/instructor headcount (for both appointed and contract personnel)
    • Students/instructor, courses/instructor, and classes/instructor

Please refer to the Instructional Workforce Status and Teaching Trends workbook for similar instructional effort analyses, presented from the perspective of the instructional home unit rather than course perspective.  Because of this difference, the counts between the two workbooks will vary slightly.

Instructional Workforce Status and Teaching Trends

The purpose of this workbook is to provide a faculty 'home department' view of instructional effort. Specifically, all faculty are represented who have been hired to perform instructional activity even if they are not teaching during a term.  Staff is included to the extent they were identified in the Schedule of Classes as an instructor for a course.

This workbook helps answer the following questions:

• What is the composition of instructional personnel working in my unit (RC or department) by Title Group?
• Were my workforce teaching or not, and if not, isolate the workforce who are on leave or serving in administrative positions (categorized by Title Group)?
• What have the teachings trends been for my appointed personnel over time, by Title Group and Employee Rank?
• How much of my instructional activity is invested in teaching courses in other departments? (mine vs. theirs)
  • What is the breakdown by Title Group?
• Of my positions teaching, what is the composition by Title Group and Rank?
• Of my personnel teaching outside of my unit over time, what courses did they teach?
• Where is the workforce teaching my courses coming from?
• What courses are my workforce teaching by Title Group and Employee Rank?
