Peer Comparisons

Peer groups are identified by institutions in order to compare and measure themselves in certain areas (e.g. enrollments, completions, tuition rates, graduation rates) to other institutions with similar characteristics or missions. These peer comparative groups are becoming more prevalent in internal decision making as they help guide change and provide future direction for the institution. List of peer comparison groups for each IU campus.

Note: IPEDS data is used for the sake of consistency in all comparative views below.

Admissions

The Peer Comparison Report for Admissions compares the fall admissions data of each IU campus to those of its peer institutions. The number of applicants, admits, and enrollees - as well as students' ACT and SAT test scores - are representative of first-time degree/certificate-seeking undergraduate students.

Fall Enrollment

The Peer Comparison Report for Fall Enrollment compares the Fall enrollment (overall, as well as by course load, level, career, sex, and race/ethnicity) of each IU campus to those of its peer institutions, over the last five years. All data for this report are retrieved from the IPEDS Data Center.

Tuition and Fees

The Peer Comparison Report for Tuition and Fees compares the amount of tuition and required fees covering a full academic year most frequently charged to students at each IU campus to those of its peer institutions, over the last five years. All data for this report are retrieved from the IPEDS Data Center.

Cost of Attendance

The Peer Comparison Report for Cost of Attendance compares the cost of attendance of each IU campus to those of its peer institutions. Cost of attendance is the total amount of tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, and other expenses that a full-time, first-time degree/certificate-seeking student pays in an academic year. Costs reported by the institution are those amounts used by the financial aid office to determine a student's financial need.

Average Net Price

The Peer Comparison Report for Average Net Price (ANP) compares the overall average net price, as well as average net price by family income level, of each IU campus to those of its peer institutions. IPEDS defines ANP as students' total cost of attendance minus the average amount of federal, state, and/or institutional gift aid. This figure is calculated for full-time beginning undergraduate students who paid in-state tuition rates and were awarded federal, state, and/or institutional gift aid.

Completions

Comparative completion data (e.g. institutional peers, state peers) by campus and degree type (e.g. Associate, Bachelor’s, Master’s, Doctoral – Professional/Research) for the last seven years.

Retention

Comparative retention rate data (e.g. fall-to-fall retention rates for institutional and state peers) by campus for the last five years. As reported by IPEDS, these retention rates report the percentage of first-time Bachelor degree-seeking undergraduates from the previous fall who are again enrolled in the current fall.

Graduation Rates

Comparative graduation rate data (e.g. 4-year, 5-year and 6-year graduation rates for institutional and state peers) by campus for the last five years. As reported by IPEDS, these graduation rates reported those students in bachelor's or equivalent degree-seeking subcohort who attained a bachelor's degree or equivalent within 4,5, or 6 (150% completion) years.

Number of Faculty

The Peer Comparison Report for Number of Faculty compares the faculty headcount of each IU campus to those of its peer institutions. Number of faculty is reported by Academic Rank (Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, Instructor, Lecturer, No academic rank), Tenure Status (Tenured, On-Tenure Track, Not on tenure track/No tenure system), Sex, and Underrepresented Status. All data for this report are retrieved from the IPEDS Data Center. Faculty numbers represent an annual Fall snapshot of each institution's human resources/payroll data.
