Liam Newlin serves as a Data Engineer where he consults and collaborates in researching innovative methods and processes in data management and data governance for IU Research and other supporting University administrative units. In this role, he advises and collaborates in developing system and operation management reports to ensure a high-level of data quality and availability. Additionally, he provides methods and processes to ensure security controls are systematically reviewed and implemented. Liam, also, serves as one of the PBI Champion Lead’s for the IU Power BI Community of Practice.
Liam began his 30+ years of employment at IU beginning in 1988 as an undergraduate in the University Support Center serving as a consultant where he was exposed to Ingres and it is here, he began his data wrangling journey. With a little 4GL exposure and newfound RDMBS knowledge, he served as a FOCUS consultant (1990) in the UCS Information Center which is today’s equivalent of the Enterprise Data and Services Delivery team. From 1992 until 1995, he served as a Data Analyst in the office of University Enrollment Services until he moved into the role as the Data Manager in the Office of Affirmative Action. In 1996, he returned to UIRR as a Management Reporting Analyst where he remained until 2011. From 2011 to 2012, Liam served as a Senior Data Analyst in the Office of Research Administraiton and then from 2012 to 2022, he served as the Manager of the Data Analysis & Reporting for the Vice President for Research.
Through each of these roles, he has gained valuable experience in connecting to and reporting from disparate and diverse data sources at IU as well as having acquired a comprehensive understanding of the complexities surrounding federal/state compliance and institutional reporting at an R1 institution.
