These views are provided university wide (less IPFW), and for each IU campus for 2005 through the current fall and leverage the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data Survey (IPEDS) definitions. The tables show counts and percentages for undergraduate, graduate/professional, and total degree-seeking students by race/ethnicity. Additionally, the single race selections of students defined as "Two or More Races" are provided in a duplicated fashion. Calculated counts and percentages are provided for the categories of students of color and under-represented students of color. Students of color is defined by self-reported race/ethnicity classification as African American, Native American, Hispanic, Asian, Pacific Islander, and Two or More Races. Under-represented students of color excludes Asian. The denominator in this ratio includes White but excludes International and unknown.
** Prior to 2010, the race/ethnicity classification was seven, mutually exclusive options of African American, Hispanic, Asian/Pacific Islander, Native American, White, International, and unknown.
** International student headcounts are based only on the student visa permit category of U.S. Nonresidents (i.e. excluding naturalized U.S. citizens and permanent residents). UIRR international student reporting is based on guidelines from the federal Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). As of Fall 2022, students who qualify for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) program will be reported under their self-identified ethnicity. This is in contrast to prior years, when a subset of individuals who qualified for DACA were instead reported in International headcounts. The results will be a small increase in reported headcounts of Hispanic/Latino, Black/African American, and Asian students, and a corresponding small decrease in the reported headcounts of International persons.
Counts and frequencies are provided longitudinally by race/ethnicity and campus. These tables are provided for undergraduate degree-seeking, total degree-seeking, and first-time beginners.
These views compare the race/ethnicity counts and proportions of IU students to available referential groups. For IU-Indianapolis and the regional campuses this includes the established service regions (Indiana counties), while Bloomington and IU overall are compared to the state and US population aged 18-24.
