Overview
Starting with the fall 2018 first day of classes snapshot, IA will offer different sets of data for reporting student headcounts geographically in the Census Snapshot table (IR_CEN_TRM_SNPSHT_GT) or the IR Admissions Snapshot table (IR_ADM_SNPSHT_PRLM_AUD_GT). Each set of fields is designed to meet one of these purposes:
1. Country of Origin
a. Purpose: This is the basis for IA’s enrollment geographic reports of students’ country of origin. The goal is to represent the breadth of student geographic origins by country (e.g. Nicaragua), region (e.g. Latin America), sub-continent (e.g. Central America/Mexico), and continent (e.g. North America).
b. Definition: If the student has a record with IU International Services, then this represents the country of origin maintained by their office for the student. For example, if a naturalized U.S. citizen lived in Indiana for most of their life and originated from Nicaragua, IA would report this U.S. citizen’s country of origin as Nicaragua. Students with no record with International Services are reported by default with the U.S. as their country of origin.
Students with no record with International Services are reported by default with the U.S. as their country of origin.
c. IA reports:
i. Enrollment Summary Tool (See the Tableau report tabs labeled Geo)
1. https://iuia.iu.edu/finding-data/enrollment/index.html > Official/First Day Headcounts and Hours
d. Caveats:
i. This is not to be used for international student reporting. Instead, use the reporting ethnicity columns with a value of “non-resident alien” (NR-Alien) for that purpose. See this IR Data Guide for more information:
1. https://iuia.iu.edu/finding-data/ir-data-guides/index.html > Reporting Ethnicity and International
ii. Certain countries may have multiple names. If two students from the same country have their country coded with different country codes, IA reports these under a singlename (e.g. Myanmar and Burma are reported as Myanmar). See the appendix below for a list of these cases.
2. Admission home state and Indiana home county as of the student’s first IU enrollment by career
a. Purpose: This is the basis for IA’s enrollment geographic reports of students’ admission home state and Indiana county. It is also used for IA admissions geographic reporting.
b. Definition: This is the student’s admission home address at the point when the student first enrolled at IU in a particular combination of academic career and degree-seeking status (degreeseeking or non-degree). For example, if a student first enrolled as a non-degree undergraduate on 7/15/2016, the admission home address that was effective on 7/15/2016 would be displayed on student term rows with non-degree undergraduate enrollment. Then, if that same student first enrolled as a degree-seeking undergraduate on 6/20/2018, the admission home address that was effective on 6/20/2018 would be displayed on student term rows with degree-seeking undergraduate enrollment. See the following IR Data Guide for additional information:
i. https://iuia.iu.edu/finding-data/ir-data-guides/index.html > IR Admit Term_Admit Type_Admit Address.doc

d. Caveats:
i. In the IA Enrollment Summary Tool, students with a country of origin other than U.S. are excluded from the headcounts of students by U.S. home state and Indiana home county. In other words, a naturalized U.S. citizen who lived most of their life in Monroe County, Indiana, would not be listed under Indiana or an Indiana county, but instead only under their country of origin.
ii. In the IA Admissions Point-in-Cycle report, the country of origin is not used, and geographic reporting is based solely on the admissions home address data, as described above.
iii. If an admission home address was not on file at the time of first enrollment at IU, this field is populated with one of these other address types from the time of first enrollment, selected in the following sequence: mailing address, home address, then local address.

3. Current address as of a particular snapshot
a. Purpose: This is primarily to indicate the student’s residential location when reporting online student headcounts, particularly students whose classes are part of the Online Course Connect program.
b. Definition: The current address fields include the country, state, postal code, and Indiana county where applicable. A student’s current address is selected from one of these types of addresses in the SIS, in the following order:

e. Caveats:
i. The IA census snapshot table (IR_CEN_TRM_SNPSHT_GT) captures the current address for all enrolled students, including those who are not enrolled in online programs or distance education classes.
ii. Certain countries may have multiple names. If two students from the same country have their country coded with different country codes, IA reports these under a single name (e.g. Myanmar and Burma are reported as Myanmar). See the appendix below for a list of these cases.
iii. Note that the logic for this field matches the following table and field:
PSE_PRSN_ADDR_ST.PRSN_DRV_FA2_ADDR_KEY

4. Indicator of whether a student is from the Indiana county service region for the student’s campus
a. Purpose: This yes-no flag indicates if a student’s Indiana home county (see the description above) is within the service region of the campus where the student is enrolled. Note that there are instances where two campuses share the same service region county. For example, both the Kokomo and South Bend campuses serve students from Fulton County.
b. Definition: The associations between IU campuses and Indiana counties for IR reporting by service region is maintained by IA. These associations are listed in Appendix 2 below.

d. Caveats:
i. Service-region reporting is done for all IU campuses other than Bloomington.
ii. IA reports admissions headcounts by Indiana county service region regardless of a student’s country of origin. For example, a naturalized U.S. citizen with an Indiana home county of Fulton and enrolled at Kokomo would be reported as within the service region, regardless of the student’s country of origin.
